Purposefully Perplexed

Sometimes I have to wonder why I was put on this earth.

Well, one thing is for certain:

It sure as hell wasn’t for my domestic skills.

The world probably isn’t deficient in people who are disturbingly proficient at folding fitted sheets by rolling them into big, blobulous balls of fabric.

So that can’t possibly be it.

Hmmm…

Is it solely for my ability to load and unload the dishwasher?

Granted, I do a commendable job of balancing creativity and efficiency by cramming the crap out of the dishwasher with my mad Tetris skills.

But I can’t imagine that could possibly be it, either.

With the start of a new year, my brain has been doing that thing again.

You know, that thing where it encourages deeper and more intense thinking about…things.

Like purpose.

And I do contemplate my purpose, from time to time.

But mostly, I just try to get through the day without major disaster, chaos, or injury.

It’s the little things, right?

But getting back to purpose.

If I sit down and think about all the things I routinely manage to accomplish in the course of a day…

Chauffeuring kids to school in a crazed frenzy?

Running/folding a dozen loads of laundry?

Pushing the vacuum around the house?

Emptying overflowing trash?

Yeah, not very inspiring.

And these things definitely don’t hold much potential in the way of achieving a sense of purpose.

Oh, well.

Some of the more promising options on my list:

Unclogging the toilet during dinner?

(Thanks, boys! Can’t think of anything else I’d rather be doing.)

Being used for Nerf target practice while carrying a stack of fancy plates?

(I suppose a good challenge never hurt anyone…)

Slamming baseballs over the fence to flaunt my awesomeness?

(I am pretty good at hitting things.)

Making people laugh with my offbeat humor?

(Now we’re talking!)

If I was put on this earth to share the gift of humor through my writing, I’d be most honored.

But if that’s not my true purpose, I can only hope it’s not because I’m on track to becoming the World’s Best Toilet-Unclogger.

~Happy Friday, friends! Hope the first week of the new year has been treating you well!~

What's your superpower? I mean, purpose?

    • The way I look at it, if I make it through life without ever figuring out how to properly fold fitted sheets, it’s probably not the worst thing in the world. Sure, it’s not pretty, but I can live with that. 😛

  1. 1st thought which popped (pooped?) into my demented not-so-little head was a short speech by the Michael Caine character in ‘dirty rotten scoundrels’ — something to the effect he wanted to be creative, an artist, reknowned, contributing … but sadly realized he had no talent and so his ‘talent’ was to appreciate all those things. i’m aspiring to rise up to the level of more-than-adequate appreciator. also … I have been hailed as a good “bad example.” but you ARE funny, so …

    • Aw, thank you! 🙂

Oh, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a stellar example of a good (so-called) bad example. It is quite the accomplishment, so you really ought to be proud of setting the standard so high. 😛

  2. If it brings joy to others, it’s a good thing. If it helps others do what they cannot do, it’s a good thing. If it shows love and compassion to others, it’s a good thing. You seem to be an awesome individual with a great purpose and a heart for others. Stay the course. You are on the right path.

    • There’s nothing overly gratifying about being the unofficially official trash emptier or dishwasher loader, but I suppose it could be worse….

And there are definitely far worse things in life than being used for Nerf target practice. It adds an element of excitement to the mundane routine of everyday life. 😛

    • Happy Monday! And thank you, dear friend! I’m happy to know you, too. 😊

The whole Nerf target practice thing really isn’t so bad…the ambushes are fairly routine, so I’m rarely caught off guard anymore. 😛

  3. You would think someone good at hitting things would not be used for Nerf target practice in any scenario…let alone one carrying plates…fancy ones at that. I suppose my purpose is to be as nice and helpful as I can be to others and try to make as many people smile each day as possible. We all need to smile more I think. Smiling is a superpower!

  4. Perhaps your purpose is to get others to think about their purpose – cause it worked for me. I think my purpose is to eat all the left overs in the pantry and I am approaching it with much dedication 🙂

  5. Thank goodness you’ve realized your life’s purpose of sharing humor through your blog. 😀 Did you know that those Tetris skills are also handy for cramming…I mean, putting away folded linens in a small linen cabinet? It’s true.

    • Tetris skills come in handy in almost any situation! I’m probably not doing the best job with those skills in the linen closet, though. My heaps of rolled up sheets are taking up far more space than they probably should. That’s where the always useful cramming skills come in to play. 😝

  6. That was cute and touching. There is a song I love called “Brighten the corner where you are” I suspect you do that and more. We have the pleasure of your self-deprecating and creative humor, along with the warmness of your loving heart. ❤ That's a bang-out combination of just a piece of your purpose. I knew you know that. ❤ Love ya, my quirky friend. 😎

  7. I guess most people would like to be told that they are here on a spectacular, one-of-a-kind mission. I’ve come to realize that we are here for the small stuff–supporting each other, showing we care. When that means unclogging the toilet or being a nerf-gun target, then we succeed by being the best unclogger or target we can be. J.

    • Well, I must be on the right track, then! I always do my best to unclog toilets with a smile…or at least, without gagging and shrieking. But I think I handle the Nerf gun shootings with far more grace… 😝

But in all seriousness, you’re absolutely right. It’s the small stuff that truly counts the most.

  8. Oh my gosh this post is hilarious! I love your sense of humor! My purpose is to help other people. Specifically, I want to help people who are going through mental health challenges and other kinds of trauma. I also want to fight the negative stigmas and stereotypes around mental illness because it’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s just as relevant as any other type of disease, and it leads to a slew of other problems.

  9. This is fantastic 😂 (I had hilarious images at the whole ‘nerf gun target while carrying a stack of fancy plates’ part 😂) I absolutely love your writing – and it certainly leaves me smiling 😊
